UjuziKilimo Launches Vijana Na Soilpal: A New Path to Youth Employment

Unlocking Kenya's economic potential lies in the hands of its youth, who make up 75% of the population yet face a staggering 35% unemployment rate. In response to this pressing challenge, UjuziKilimo is empowering over 300 agripreneurs and generating an annual economic boost of Ksh 15 million annually. Aligned with our mission to bring data-driven decision-making to smallholder farmers, we are launching the Vijana na SoilPal initiative to tackle the barriers of soil testing access. This program aims to demystify soil testing, making it accessible to all smallholder farmers while creating economic opportunities for youth. By equipping young individuals with essential resources and skills, we pave the way for sustainable development and a brighter economic future for Kenya.

What is Vijana na SoilPal all about?

Vijana na SoilPal is a youth-focused initiative launched by UjuziKilimo to demystify soil testing, making it accessible to all smallholder farmers while creating employment opportunities in the agricultural sector. This initiative is open for individuals, Agrovets, youth groups, SACCOs, and other agri-ventures to establish their own agribusinesses. The program leverages SoilPal technology, a cutting-edge soil testing and precision farming tool, to equip young people with the skills and tools necessary for modern farming practices.

How does Vijana na Soilpal empower youth?

The program empowers youth by offering them the chance to purchase a SoilPal kit for just Ksh 10,000, an affordable entry point into agritech. Once equipped with the SoilPal kit, participants enter into a revenue-sharing partnership with UjuziKilimo, where they keep 60% of the revenue generated from their soil-testing services, while we retain 40%. This model allows young people to earn income by offering valuable soil-testing services to farmers, making agriculture more efficient while building their own businesses. Applicants interested can apply here.

Why is UjuziKilimo launching this initiative now?

The launch of Vijana na SoilPal comes at a critical time when there is an increasing demand for precision farming solutions to enhance productivity in agriculture. At the same time, youth unemployment remains a pressing issue in Kenya. We recognize the untapped potential of youth to drive innovation and transformation in agriculture, and the initiative is designed to address both challenges—empowering young people economically while improving the sustainability and productivity of small-scale farms.

What role does SoilPal play in the initiative?

SoilPal is a key component of this initiative, as it is the technology that enables youth to perform precise soil tests and provide data-driven recommendations to farmers using our farm management platform FarmSuite. By using the SoilPal kit, youth can analyze soil health, identify nutrient deficiencies, and offer tailored agronomy insights. This contributes to higher crop yields and sustainable farming practices. The easy-to-use kit, combined with training provided by us, ensures that participants can operate the technology effectively, driving impact for both themselves and the farmers they serve.

What are the expected outcomes of the initiative?

The Vijana na SoilPal initiative aims to achieve several key outcomes:

  • Youth Employment: Generate job opportunities by creating accessible pathways for young people to enter and thrive in agriculture.
  • Demystify Soil Testing Beyond Borders: Expand access to soil testing knowledge and services, empowering farmers across regions to make informed decisions.
  • Enhanced Agricultural Productivity: Leverage SoilPal technology to significantly improve crop yields and farming efficiency.
  • Sustainable Farming Practices: Champion eco-friendly methods among smallholder farmers to promote environmental stewardship.
  • Economic Growth: Stimulate local economies by increasing agricultural output and driving revenue generation for participating youth.
